ChatGPT can be controlled on the iPhone with shortcuts – and on the Mac
Both the older iOS version of ChatGPT and the fresh Mac version have support for shortcuts. This can also be used to improve Siri.
OpenAI has a heart for Apple users. The official smartphone app for the popular chatbot ChatGPT was first available on the iPhone, and the Mac is also ahead of the PC on the desktop. The applications can be used to interact directly with ChatGPT, for example by voice. Customers with a ChatGPT+ subscription (20 euros per month) benefit from faster output and earlier access to new models. The Mac version, on the other hand, has a Spotlight-like command line, can process screenshots and helps with programming. What many users don't know, however, is that both the iOS and macOS versions of ChatGPT can be automated using shortcuts. This even makes it possible to improve Apple's long-neglected voice assistant Siri by using it to access ChatGPT.
Clicking together automation
Apple's shortcuts, also known as short commands, make it possible to create amazingly extensive automations that can be clicked together effortlessly. ChatGPT currently supports two commands on the iPhone: starting a new conversation and asking ChatGPT directly. The function for starting a new conversation can be easily assigned to the action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max so that ChatGPT can be started by pressing a button. Of course, you can also do this via Siri.

Alternatively, you can also ask directly. It is even possible to use a shortcut to select which model should be used. Answers can also be processed further. You can also use existing material - for example, if you want to summarize a text that is on the clipboard. If you don't want to learn how to build shortcuts, you can also ask ChatGPT itself to help. The chatbot is good at guiding the user (although the data status should be considered).
Is ChatGPT coming with iOS 18?
However, it is also conceivable that Apple itself will soon incorporate ChatGPT – or a variant of it – into iOS and possibly macOS. The rumor mill currently believes in a partnership between the two companies. Apple is expected to link its own AI applications with the chatbot. An announcement is expected to be made at WWDC 2024 on June 10.
It will be interesting to see how Apple resolves the issue of data protection. Apparently, the company is relying on a type of mixed data processing in which all content on the server is encrypted.
