Without much fanfare, OpenAI has released the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows. For everyone, not just paying customers.

Now that OpenAI has released a ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, it is now also the turn of Windows users: the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows is generally available.

Without further ado, the desktop app is now also available for Windows on the OpenAI download page. However, the small installation package is merely a downloader that downloads the actual 116 MByte software from the Microsoft Store when executed.
Early beta since mid-October
The release notes begin in mid-October this year. The first versions were therefore still reserved for paying customers. Since then, a number of functions have been added: the chat history can be searched or voice control can be used, which should also react to emotions. Photos can be taken with the computer webcam and used in the chat. The version released on Thursday this week adds screenshot use via the Windows snipping tool.

There are not many settings in the app. You can specify whether GPT-4o or GPT4o mini should be used. You can also purchase an upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, which allows additional GPT models and unlimited use. However, the shortcut for calling up the app cannot be adjusted manually – the intended combination of ALT and space bar did not work in an initial brief inspection of the app.
The early test version was also discussed in the OpenAI community forum. Users can also leave feedback there, such as reporting bugs.
In mid-May, OpenAI released the first pre-release version of the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. This was also initially reserved for paying customers. This was followed at the end of June by the general release for all users, including those using a free license.
