ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence: OpenAI limits requests, promotes Plus upgrade
The use of ChatGPT within Apple Intelligence is free, but not unlimited. OpenAI gets an exclusive Plus marketing opportunity.

Users of the second developer beta of iOS 18.2 report new features in the implementation of ChatGPT in the operating system: In future, there will be an explicit warning that the chatbot via Siri cannot be used indefinitely, at least with the "advanced" functions. In the system settings in the "ChatGPT extension" area, a "Daily Limit" section can now be seen under "Advanced Capabilities".
GPT-4o only available to a limited extent
Apple does not specify when restrictions will apply. However, the "Advanced Capabilities" for ChatGPT have this daily limit. The system settings only show whether you are above or below the limit. There is a link to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus directly below the limit. It also states that you have access to these "advanced features" until the end of the daily limit. After that, the "standard version" is offered for a maximum of 24 hours.

Apple does not specify in the system settings which models users receive when they are in standard mode (Basic) and in "advanced" mode. However, the latter is likely to be based on GPT-4o. As reported, Apple hardly shares any user information with OpenAI as long as the user is not logged in to OpenAI. IP addresses are also concealed. However, the request naturally ends up with the AI company, without which it could not be processed.
Upgrade for money – Does Apple benefit?
The integration of ChatGPT Plus is comparatively deep. If you click on the "Upgrade" link, the option to take out a subscription appears directly in the system settings. It is advertised with "five times more messages with GPT-4o" and "access to even more modern models". There are also "higher limits for photo and file uploads" as well as "image generation and web browsing", whereby image generation also appears to work as standard under iOS 18.2, albeit only limited to a smaller number.
ChatGPT's "Advanced Voice Mode" for more natural interaction via voice is also advertised. Many of the advertised features are only available via the ChatGPT app. The cost is 19.99 US dollars per month, including "Auto-Renew". It is unclear how much Apple earns from this – normally 30 percent commission would be due, then 15 percent after one year.
