The AI of 2025 is supposed to be "agentic": in the future, ChatGPT & Co. will be able to access the web and services to carry out meaningful tasks on behalf of the user. The macOS version of the official OpenAI client is now moving in this direction: with the latest update, which runs on Apple Silicon machines from macOS 14, ChatGPT can access more programs.

The feature is currently still marked as beta and can be activated via the settings menu. "Enable Work with Apps" is started via a switch. In a further submenu ("Manage Apps"), you can then set which rights you want to give ChatGPT. Currently supported programs include Apple's Notes app, the sales tool Quip and the productivity suite Notion.
If desired, ChatGPT can interact with these programs or read content from their databases. Previously, it was already possible to share screen content, for example in Xcode, TextEdit, VS Code or even the terminal – including copy & paste. OpenAI has also announced integration for other development environments and developer editors. These include JetBrains IDEs, various VS Code forks and BBEdit, which is popular with Apple users.

Only for paying customers
Access is particularly useful because it is quicker to get results than inserting requests individually into ChatGPT. Programming with the support of the chatbot is easier this way. Voice input (also in the form of "Advanced Voice Mode") is also supported.
The usual security concerns when using ChatGPT remain: requests are stored in the log and can also be used for training, depending on the contract with OpenAI. In addition, "Work with Apps" currently only works for paying customers. These include subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro and the Team, Enterprise and Education packages. Competitors such as Anthropic with Claude are also working on giving their chatbots access to computers. At Claude, the function is called "Computer Use" and is currently in a (very) limited beta phase.
