Code discovered: Is Apple planning an invitation app for the iPhone?
Indications in iOS 18.3 Beta suggest that Apple is working on a new app that can be used to organize events.
Is a whole new Apple app coming with iOS 18.3? Code leaks suggest so. As reported by 9to5Mac, it appears to be a new tool for managing events, which is apparently called “Invites”. It is unclear why Apple wants to outsource this function, which could actually be part of the regular calendar app, to a separate program.
GroupKit and iCloud.com
Information on “Invites” is already included in the second beta of iOS 18.3, but is also said to have been included in an iOS 18.2 beta. However, the corresponding code was then removed from the current final version of the software. 9to5Mac estimates that “Invites” will receive additional features alongside the usual invitation function in the calendar app. The application uses the iOS 18 daemon GroupKit and interacts with iCloud. There could then be a separate version on iCloud.com.
Essentially, the app displays a list of people who have been invited to an event and who have already confirmed their attendance – so you can keep track of who is attending an event. It is not yet clear whether “Invites” is part of another application or whether it really is a standalone app. A mini-application for the Messages app would also be conceivable. However, it is not a simple additional feature for the calendar app. Apparently, Apple also wants more users to get to know and use the invitation function. It is used very often by Google Calendar users, for example.
No announcement from Apple
To date, there has been no announcement from Apple about “Invites”. Normally, all the key features of iOS 18 should have been announced at WWDC 2024 last summer. “Presumably, the app will have a more entertaining interface than the one currently offered by the Calendar app for inviting someone to an event,” the report says.
It remains unclear why the application is now apparently being delivered so late. This apparently has nothing to do with Apple Intelligence. Another previously unannounced feature is a specific app store for games, writes 9to5Mac. This is currently still being tested internally for iOS 18, but could also only appear with iOS 19.
