In line with the trend reversal back to combustion engines, MG is no longer offering its new models in Europe with electric drive alone. The MG HS mid-range SUV will be offered with plug-in hybrid and combustion drives from the fall, as MG reveals in an initial, still rather meagerly informative announcement.

For a long time, the traditional British brand MG stood for attractive classic cars. Purchased by the Chinese SAIC Group, MG then attracted attention with affordable electric models and had the first electric estate car in its range. A real competitor to the expensive European electric cars. While other markets had the choice, the range for Europe remained all-electric until the MG 3 appeared. With the battery-electric MG Cyberster roadster model, MG even underpinned its electric car ambitions by expanding into other segments that had previously been untapped by other manufacturers for various reasons. However, the HS, which the manufacturer describes as an "all-round SUV", is now available with a petrol engine or as a petrol plug-in hybrid. This could perhaps dampen the enthusiasts' enthusiasm for MG, but on the other hand, the brand should be able to better stabilize its sales in Europe.

The combustion engine in the HS is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with turbocharger. It delivers 125 kW, offers a powerful 275 Nm of torque and is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This version completes the standard sprint in 9.4  seconds.

The hybrid version has 105 kW with an electric drive that contributes a further 154 kW. With its 24.7 kWh battery, electric ranges of up to 100 kilometers are possible at best. With combined energy, it should travel up to 1000 km. As the MG HS has not yet been homologated for the German market, we will receive more detailed information from MG – including on charging capacity – at the time of market launch, probably not until mid to late 2024. MG specifies acceleration of 6.8 seconds to 100 km/h.

Compared to its predecessor, the MG HS has grown slightly, the wheelbase has been extended by 45 to 2765 mm and now has an overall length of 4.66 meters. It has also become 14 mm wider. According to MG, the load space has increased by 44 to 507 liters due to the changed dimensions. The two 12.3  inch displays are used for driver information and infotainment. Features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera and wireless smartphone charging. The market launch is in the fall; MG has not yet announced prices.
