Nikon Z 50mm f/1.4: A powerful alternative to the S line
Nikon continues the trend and presents the Nikkor Z 50 mm f/1.4, a fast alternative to the high-quality S line.
Nikon has announced a new 50mm lens with a speed of f/1.4 for its mirrorless Z cameras. The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 will be available from September 2024 for 560 euros.
The comparatively low price of the new lens is remarkable. At 560 euros, the recommended retail price is only slightly higher than the street price of the less fast Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S (ab 498 €). Nikon is thus continuing a strategy that was already evident with the Z 35mm f/1.4 presented in June 2024. We tested the reportage focal length in the current issue of c't Fotografie.
In contrast to the f/1.8 model, the new 50mm f/1.4 is not part of Nikon's S line for the highest quality demands. Nevertheless, the manufacturer promises an "impressive imaging performance".
Technical details
The optical construction consists of ten lenses in seven groups, including an aspherical lens. Nine aperture blades ensure an appealing bokeh. The autofocus works with a multi-focusing system which, according to Nikon, focuses quickly and precisely.
With dimensions of 74.5 mm Ă— 86.5 mm (diameter Ă— length) and a weight of 420 grams, the lens is compact and relatively light. It has a 62 mm filter thread and is sealed against dust and splash water. The closest focusing distance is 37 centimetres, giving the lens a maximum magnification of 1:5.9.
Nikon advertises the lens as versatile for various genres such as portrait, landscape and street photography. The high speed of f/1.4 enables low-light photography and creative work with a shallow depth of field.
According to the manufacturer, videographers will be interested in the minimized focus breathing – which means that the image section only changes slightly when the focus is shifted – and a stepless adjustment ring without clicking noises.
The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 will be available in stores from September 2024 for 560 euros. We assume that the price will quickly fall below that of the 50 mm f/1.8 S.
