SSDs for Mac and iPhone: With TB5 from LaCie, with MagSafe from Sandisk
At CES, two companies presented new SSDs that are particularly suitable for Apple users. One is said to be very fast, the other to expand iPhone memory.
At CES, Seagate subsidiary LaCie and Western Digital subsidiary Sandisk presented two external SSDs that should be of particular interest to users of iPhone and (current) Mac models. The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 is said to be a particularly stable medium with Thunderbolt 5, while the Sandisk Creator Phone SSD with MagSafe support fits directly onto Apple smartphones.
TB5 with up to 4 TByte
The Rugged SSD Pro5 is available with 2 or 4 TByte. According to the manufacturer, it can read at a maximum of 6.7 GByte/s and write at 5.3 Gyte/s. The values apply to a 50 GB pseudo-SLC cache, which only writes one bit per cell. Extremely atypical: According to LaCie, the read rate also drops when the cache is full. The manufacturer then specifies 5 GByte/s read and 1.8 GByte/s write.
The SSD is housed in an IP68-certified casing that protects against dust and water and is “ideal for 6K and 8K video editing in real time”, explains LaCie.
LaCie has not yet announced euro prices. The SSD costs 400 (2 TByte) and 600 (4 TByte) US dollars plus tax in North America. Backwards compatibility to Thunderbolt 4 and USB with 10, 20 and 40 Gbit/s is provided. The connected device must supply at least 15 watts, which may also be an iPad Pro. There is no external power supply. A TB5 cable (nominal 80 Gbit/s) is included in the packaging.
Filming with MagSafe
With the Creator Phone SSD, SanDisk delivers a compact storage device that should particularly appeal to iPhone filmmakers. It is attached to the back of the iPhone using MagSafe and a compact cable with USB-C is included. The model is intended for owners of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. The SSD can then be used to back up ProRes recordings without filling up the internal memory. This works in direct mode with 4K60 or even 4K120, depending on the model.
The theoretical maximum throughput of the Creator Phone SSD is 950 MByte/s write and 1000 MByte/s read, which is fast enough for ProRes. SanDisk sells the MagSafe SSD with 1 TByte and 2 TByte, priced at 110 and 170 dollars plus tax respectively. The housing is made of silicone and comes with IP65 protection against splash water and dust. Sandisk also speaks of “drop protection of up to three meters”.
