iPhone 16 teardowns: modifications and larger batteries
Apple has changed the internal structure of the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro, as initial disassembly tests show. The battery capacities have also been revealed.

It was already known that Apple has taken various measures to simplify the repair of its smartphones with the iPhone 16. Now a first teardown of the devices by the Chinese repair specialist REWA reveals various as yet unknown details. At the same time, the battery capacities Apple has installed in the new models have also been revealed.
Differences between Pro and standard models
One of the new features is the design of the battery modules, which are now housed in a metal casing in the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. This allows both a higher capacity and better protection of the cells against damage. At the same time, heat dissipation has been improved – thanks to a new, larger thermal sheet, among other things. Overheating problems as with the direct predecessors should therefore no longer occur. The motherboard is somewhat smaller and tidier overall. The battery module is still equipped with pull tabs that can be used to release the adhesive.
Apple has already gone a step further with the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus: the company uses a material that can be (de)attached using electricity. A 9-volt block battery is sufficient for this, as the company explains in a repair document. The connection must be maintained for one and a half minutes. A maximum of 30 volts direct current must not be exceeded; higher voltages accelerate the process. It remains unclear why Apple uses a different adhesive in the Pro models than in the standard iPhones – this might be incompatible with the metal housing used there.
Capacities of the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Max
In addition to the teardown videos, regulatory documents now contain information on the battery sizes Apple uses. These are now 3561 mAh for the iPhone 16 (up 6.3 percent on the iPhone 15), 4674 mAh for the 16 Plus (up 6.6 percent), 3582 mAh for the iPhone 16 Pro (up 9.4 percent) and 4685 mAh for the iPhone 16 Pro Max (up 6 percent).
This means that the performance of the iPhone 16 Pro has been increased the most. Apple now promises 27 hours of video playback, an increase of 4 hours compared to its predecessor. The iPhone 16 Pro Max now has 33 hours of video playback instead of the 29 hours of its predecessor, the 15 Pro Max. Charging is now possible with up to 25 watts via MagSafe and up to 45 watts via USB-C.
