"iPhone SE 4": Is it based on the iPhone 16?
The iPhone SE 3 is from 2022 and could do with an update. This is probably planned for next spring. New hardware rumors are coming from Asia.
When will the next entry-level iPhone arrive? There have only been a few rumors about the "iPhone SE 4" in recent months, but now there is fresh speculation from Apple's supply chain in Asia. According to a leaker on the Chinese short message service Weibo, Apple will use the iPhone 16 for its new SE, which is expected to be released in spring 2025 - at least for important parts. "The [manufacturing process] of the back of the SE 4 is exactly the same as the standard model [of the iPhone 16], which is expected in September," writes the user "Fixed Focus Digital", who has already been correct in the past.
Ready for Apple Intelligence
This means that Apple appears to be using the same chassis for the iPhone 16 as for the "iPhone SE 4". However, Apple is said to have already planned to use the iPhone 14 in the past. However, this will soon no longer be produced, or only in small quantities, which is why it is apparently wiser to use parts from the iPhone 16. The "SE 4" is also likely to inherit other components, including the new A18 SoC. It should be ready for Apple Intelligence and ensure that the entry-level model can be sold for several years. There will also be changes to the camera, and the "SE 4" may also be able to record spatial videos.
Apple is reportedly aiming for a price of less than 550 euros for the "SE 4" in order to also cover the market for cheaper devices. The outdated SE 3 currently costs at least 529 euros from Apple itself, albeit with a meager 64 GB. Hopefully Apple will deliver an upgrade for the "SE 4".
Time for a fresh start with Face ID
Currently, the SE 3 is a rather wild mix: old hardware from the iPhone 7 era, including the Home button, meets (at the time) current hardware such as the A15 Bionic with 5G support. Apple has been planning for some time to finally equip the SE with Face ID facial recognition and a notch that enables a larger screen.
It is conceivable that the "iPhone SE 4" will be launched on the market in March or April 2025. That would be three years after the predecessor model, which was released in March 2022. The model is then likely to remain on sale for at least another three years.
