visionOS 2: Update to make Vision Pro more productive

Actually, visionOS 2 would be better called visionOS 1.5. Because in terms of functionality, the update is not a huge leap, as one would expect from such a jump in version number. Nevertheless, there has been positive feedback from the first beta testers, although not all of the announced features are yet available for testing. Once they are available, however, there should be a leap in productivity when using the headset for regular work.

The really big screen

Support for external keyboards and trackpads and, above all, the so-called Mac Virtual Display, which brings your own computer into visionOS, already make it possible to work "properly" under the glasses. The integrated Safari browser is also fully functional, and there are also applications that make it easier to use browser apps to switch between them quickly. The windows that remain in place also allow you to set up a working environment.

With visionOS 2, some improvements have been added here. The Mac Virtual Display is greatly expanded and you no longer need hacks to display more windows. Apple is increasing the resolution of the Mac Virtual Display. At the same time, there will be a new "Ultra-Wide Mode" that allows you to arrange two virtual 4K monitors next to each other, which are displayed in a curved manner. Technically, however, this seems to be a greater challenge, as Apple has announced the feature for "later this year". Accordingly, it will only appear with one of the updates for visionOS 2.

Keyboard on the beach

visionOS 2 also delivers improvements in terms of peripheral devices. Mice - including Apple's Magic Mouse - are finally supported under the glasses. Apple has never revealed why this has taken so long. This means that even those who don't like trackpads can work normally. At the same time, Apple now makes it possible to show keyboards when you are in an immersive mode - such as the popular Environments.

"When you're immersed in an environment, visionOS 2 recognizes your Magic Keyboard or MacBook keyboard and displays it so you can keep typing - on the beach, in the mountains or even on the moon," the company writes. Unfortunate: Keyboards from other manufacturers are apparently not detected. visionOS 2 is expected in the fall, probably in September or October. Apple Intelligence will be left out for the time being and will probably be released for the headset in spring 2025.
