Coming soon: APS-C lens for Canon with Apple Spatial Video
The lens can now also be ordered from dealers in Germany. However, it is not inexpensive.
RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL from Canon: It doesn't always have to be the iPhone for spatial videos.

The standard option for private individuals to record spatial videos for the Vision Pro is the iPhone in addition to the headset itself: the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models and all current 16-series iPhones support this. Now there is another way to create spatial experiences for the mixed reality glasses: An EOS R7 from Canon along with a matching dual-eye lens. This was already announced in the summer, but is only now coming onto the market.
Getting close to the 3D subject
The hardware goes by the slightly unwieldy name RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL and is due to start shipping in mid-November, as can be seen from the Canon website and the websites of photo retailers in Germany, which are already allowing pre-orders. "Tell your story with 3D depth, capture life's adventures, daily explorations and exciting portraits with this new stereoscopic lens," the Japanese photography company advertises floridly.

The field of view is 60 degrees "to create images similar to human vision". The on-sensor layout corresponds to the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 DUAL FISHEYE (144-degree field of view). The left and right lenses are to be focused simultaneously, the autofocus works from a distance of 0.15 meters with a maximum magnification of 0.07x, which should also enable detailed 3D subjects to be photographed.
With camera for just under 1850 euros
As mentioned, the Canon spatial video lens requires a EOS R7 (starting from 999 €), which is an APS-C model. It costs around 1300 euros as a body. The RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL is available for pre-order in the USA for just under 450 euros (plus tax and shipping), while German dealers charge 549 euros.
Spatial videos and photos taken with the lens are output in 3D 180-degree, 3D theater and spatial formats and are compatible with the Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3. The aperture consists of seven elements. The weight of the lens is a tolerable 131 grams, which together with the EOS R7 makes for a very portable setup. Initial tests will have to show how much better the quality will be compared to an iPhone.
