Volker Wissing is leaving the FDP after the break-up of the traffic light coalition and will remain Digital Minister. The Rhineland-Palatinate politician made the announcement in Berlin on Thursday morning. Other FDP ministers around party leader Christian Lindner are leaving the cabinet. In future, Wissing will carry out his function as an independent.
He has always spoken out in favor of a willingness to compromise, said Wissing. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had asked him yesterday whether he wanted to remain in office. He had considered what the right step would be in view of the resignation of Finance Minister and FDP Chairman Christian Lindner and had come to the conclusion that a resignation would be wrong. His position was "known to everyone" within the party.
"Building bridges is a service to society," said the now non-party Digital and Transport Minister. He hoped that "everyone would now act responsibly in their respective roles". Wissing was referring not least to the members of the Bundestag, who now have sovereignty over the advancement or failure of laws.
