Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W: Microcontroller board with WLAN presented

In August, Raspberry Pi Plc. presented the RP2350 microcontroller and the Pico 2 craft board equipped with it. Now comes the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W version with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. As with the predecessor Pico W, the Infineon Airoc CYW43439, which is coupled to the RP2350 via SPI, is used as the radio chip.

The list price of the Pico 2 W is 7 US dollars. In this country, it is likely to initially cost more than 8 euros. The predecessor Pico W (with RP2040) is available for less than 7 euros.

The RP2350 is significantly more powerful than its predecessor RP2040. The latter contains two ARM Cortex-M0+ computing cores and 264 KByte SRAM. The newcomer, on the other hand, has two Cortex-M33 cores with DSP and SIMD instructions, two alternatively usable RISC-V cores and 520 KByte SRAM, which can be expanded with up to 16 MByte of externally connected PSRAM.

Certification for professionals

The radio module of the Pico 2 W carries the FCC ID 2ABCB-PICO2W. This certification makes it easier for commercial buyers to integrate the Pico 2 W into their own products. The radio module still only operates in the 2.4 GHz band. With the C-SDK, Bluetooth (5.2) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) can be used via the BTstack library from BlueKitchen.

RP2350 boards with wireless modules are also available from other manufacturers, such as the Pimoroni Pico Plus 2 W, also with CYW43439, the Ilabs Challenger+ RP2350 WiFi6/BLE5 or the Melopero Perpetuo Lora with LoRaWAN.
