iOS 18.2: These improvements are available for camera control
With the next iOS update, Apple is also delivering changes to the Camera Control function. Beta testers praise the change.

Many users are still unfamiliar with one of the main new features of the iPhone 16: the camera control. The touch-sensitive button is supposed to help users take photos and videos more quickly and easily, but is unfortunately not self-explanatory. As part of iOS 18.2, there will therefore be a series of changes and improvements so that users do not have to resort to the radical method and simply switch off the Camera Control function.
Camera control is powerful, but also complex
Apple's official instructions for camera control on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are extensive. The button at the bottom right can do much more than just open the camera and take a photo or video. You can select and adjust six different settings alone, which you can achieve with two light presses of the button. Exposure, depth of field, zoom, camera selection, photographic style and image toning can be set directly with a button and swipe gesture.

What was not possible until now, however, was to open the camera directly when the iPhone screen was deactivated. This meant you couldn't simply press the button when you weren't looking at the iPhone. With a new function in iOS 18.2, this can now be turned off: The screen no longer has to be active, the button opens the camera in all situations. The camera control can also be used to determine autofocus and exposure. A light press on the button is enough for the camera to stop changing both automatically. The image is then released with a firmer press.
Better shutter release behavior plus more AI
Finally, the third new feature is the option to adjust the shutter release behavior of the camera control. Within the accessibility settings, there are three speeds for the all-important double-click: "Standard", "Slow" and "Slower". What is primarily intended for people with disabilities also helps users who are currently unable to use the button. They should try out whether a different setting helps.
iOS 18.2 also comes with a new AI function that can be triggered using camera control: Visual Intelligence. With a long press of a button, the image of the surroundings is scanned for its content and search results are spit out. Among other things, it should be possible to call up restaurant opening times, dog breeds or the type of plants. A connection to ChatGPT is also planned. As usual, however, the Apple Intelligence feature is not yet available in Europe and is not expected to be released here until April 2025.
