Crowdfunding for Star Citizen exceeds 750 million US dollars

In the last few weeks, fans have once again shown massive support for the space MMO, which has been in development since 2012. The reason is probably a video.

In the last twelve years, fans of Chris Roberts' space epics have invested over three quarters of a billion US dollars in "Star Citizen", which has not even been given a release date yet. The 500 million mark was only broken a good two years ago.

Last week alone, around 5 million was added, as can be seen on the crowdfunding status page. Since then, the virtual event"IAE 2954" has also been running, an image event during which the current development status of "Star Citizen" can be played for free. However, a video that was released as part of the real event "CitizenCon" at the end of October 2024 may have contributed even more to the latest hype surrounding the game. Before that, there was crunch time with the developers.

In the clip, the creators show over an hour of gameplay from 'Squadron 42', the solo game spin-off of the Star Citizen universe. It is not yet finished, but according to the studio CIG, it has been feature complete since 2023. CIG does not specify how long the bug fixing and optimization period will take. The last concrete date was announced in 2019, when it was said that a beta version of Squadron 42 would be released at the end of 2020. This did not happen, and the game is now scheduled for release in 2026.

In the video published on YouTube, which lasts over an hour, you can see the game's prologue, which, according to media reports, was played live at CitizenCon. However, there were two crashes that cannot be seen in the video – So bug fixes are obviously more than appropriate. What looks like one long cutscene is a mixture of videos in the game engine and player interaction, which only makes up a fraction of the video.

Nevertheless, the integration of virtual actors, including Gary Oldman, and the atmosphere can be described as successful. Even if you are not a fan of the legendary games in the "Wing Commander" series (Parts I to IV from 1990-1996), you can easily be swept away by the space fever with great drama surrounding the characters and the battles in space. Of course, none of this is really new, but this combination of a well-told story and active space battles is hard to find on the PC today. However, it is not clear from the video whether the tactical elements of the Wing Commander series, such as the choice of the right spaceship and weaponry, have the same effect on the development of the story as was the case in earlier games by Chris Roberts.
