iPhone 17 Air: The thinnest iPhone ever?

Over the past few years, Apple has changed little about the iPhone's external look. Sure, the company turned the notch into the Dynamic Island, the screen diagonal of the Pro models grew slightly and the iPhone mini became the Plus model. However, there has been no general overhaul of the form factor since the iPhone X. With the “iPhone 17 Air”, which some rumor cooks also refer to as the “iPhone 17 Slim”, something more could happen this autumn – at least in part. There are now new details from Asia.
No thinner than the iPad Pro M4
The new series expected for September is likely to replace the Plus model and is positioned below the Pro devices, which are to remain in the range. According to the South Korean medium Sisa Journal, the Air will be 6.25 mm thick in total, which would be 1.65 mm thinner than the iPhone 16 with its 7.8 mm. This would beat the iPhone 6, which was 6.9 mm in 2014. However, Apple would not beat the thinnest device in the current portfolio, the iPad Pro M4 13-inch with its 5.11 mm.

Apple should at least manage to beat Samsung. A “Galaxy S25 Slim” is now planned there, which could reach 6.6 mm, according to the report. Previously, there had been speculation that Apple was aiming for around 6 mm for the iPhone 17 Air, whereas 5 mm, as in the iPad Pro M4 13, is considered unrealistic, as the iPhone would then lack the necessary surface area for all components.
Plus price instead of Pro price?
Sisa Journal therefore expects the iPhone 17 Air to be 20 percent thinner than the iPhone 16, and 25 percent thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro. The report also speculates about a possible price. This is said to be based on the iPhone 16 Plus rather than the Pro models. Apple currently charges 1099 euros for the iPhone 16 Plus without a contract and 100 euros more for the Pro model with a smaller screen.
An unnamed industry insider is quoted in the report as saying that Apple has already completed product planning for the slim version of the iPhone Air and has decided to launch it on the market as a replacement for the existing Plus model. “The Plus model was stuck somewhere in the middle, so its identity was unclear to customers and sales were the worst with it. By turning it into a slim model, they could adopt a pricing policy on a par with the existing Plus model.”
