Crucial P510: 5.0 SSD with low energy consumption

Almost all previous SSDs with PCIe 5.0 consume around 10 watts during operation, far too much for mobile use. Crucial's P510 should do better.

Crucial is presenting a new SSD at the CES 2025 electronics trade fair in Las Vegas, which is positioned between the T500 Pro with PCI Express 4.0 and the top-of-the-range T705 with PCIe 5.0. However, there is still little information available about the P510. It uses PCIe 5.0 and will be available with 1 and 2 TB of storage space. Read and write speeds are said to be 10.6 and 9.5 GByte/s respectively – This value certainly only applies to the version with 2 TByte; the smaller version is likely to be somewhat slower. When accessing random addresses, the SSDs are said to achieve up to 1.5 million IOPS.

Previous Crucial SSDs with a P at the beginning of the name had no DRAM cache and mostly used the rather slow QLC memory. We assume that Crucial uses the E31T Phison controller for the P510 – which also does not support an external DRAM device. Crucial's statement that the SSD is only populated on the top side also fits in with this – Many SSDs with DRAM support also have chips on the underside; the only E31T SSD available to date, the Corsair Force Series MP700 Elite (starting from 147,24 €), is also only populated on one side.

The SSD is reportedly supplied with a heat sink, but this is likely to be smaller than usual for PCIe 5.0 SSDs. Crucial promises 25 percent lower power consumption compared to its own T705 SSD. The T705 is significantly faster with 14.5 and 12.8 GByte/s for sequential reading and writing and consumes around 10 watts. We measured a maximum of 5 watts with the aforementioned Corsair SSD; the P510 should actually also be in this range.

There is as yet as little information on the memory – TLC or QLC – as there are on prices; the market launch is scheduled for spring. You can read a detailed test of this SSD in the SSD comparison test in one of the next issues of c't.
