LG: New UltraFine with 6K suitable for the Mac – with TB 5
While Apple has left its Pro Display XDR unchanged on the market for years, LG is now coming out with a new 6K screen. It promises modern technology.
The UltraFine 6K is officially called 32U990A.

The South Korean electronics specialist LG has revived its UltraFine screen series, which was once very popular among Mac users. The 32U990A, aka UltraFine 6K, is a modern 32-inch screen that is visually similar to Apple's Studio Display, but with a larger screen diagonal and higher resolution. Depending on the price, the screen could develop into a competitor to Apple's still extremely expensive Pro Display XDR, which also displays 6K.
Facts about the screen still thin on the ground
The details about the LG UltraFine 6K are still sparse. It is already clear that it will be equipped with Thunderbolt 5 – as one of the first screens ever. The panel is IPS, more precisely a "Nano IPS Black" from LG. It offers "exceptional color accuracy and high contrast with a wide color gamut" of 99.5 percent according to Adobe RGB or 98 percent according to DCI-P3. Calibration software is supported so that the colors can be adjusted.
According to the manufacturer, the new UltraFine is particularly aimed at "media professionals". But not just them: "Its slim, geometric design improves both aesthetics and user comfort, so that every user gets their money's worth." LG has not yet specified the exact resolution or the maximum picture brightness. It is even unclear what type of backlight is used – it is hopefully more modern than the 576 LEDs of the Pro Display XDR. The latter achieves 6016 x 3384 pixels for the aforementioned 6K – they can be adjusted for a Retina surface, as is typical for Apple, which will probably also be the case with the LG. At 32 inches, the 6K of the Pro Display XDR delivers a pixel density of 218 dpi.

Competition from Dell
LG has not yet provided any information on the availability or price of the UltraFine 6K. It also remains unclear what refresh rate the display will have. Technically, at least theoretically, up to 120 Hertz would be possible using Thunderbolt 5. Apple devices that support Thunderbolt 5 include the new MacBook Pro M4 models with M4 Pro and M4 Max as well as the Mac mini M4 Pro.
Another current 6K monitor is already available from Dell. The UltraSharp 32 6K with 6144 x 3456 pixels and integrated USB hub currently costs just under 2365 euros. The screen uses – in addition to other connections – Thunderbolt 4.
