The Canon R5 II can produce defective images with three different UHS-II cards from Sandisk. Both companies have recently pointed this out. According to Canon, photos can be recorded “abnormally”. Neither company has yet published a more detailed explanation of the nature of the problem and whether the images can perhaps be saved. There is also no indication whether video recordings may also be affected. Since Canon explicitly writes about “still images”, this is probably not the case.

Canon USA has confirmed the problem on a US support page and also refers to Sandisk via a direct link for a remedy. There it says that you should contact the company to obtain a replacement under warranty. It is not yet clear whether this means that Sandisk will then send cards that work with the R5 II or refund the purchase price.

According to Sandisk, these three cards are affected, each listed here with the exact model number:

  • SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDXC UHS-II V60 64GB (SDSDXEP-064G-GN4IN)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDXC UHS-II V60 128GB (SDSDXEP-128G-GN4IN)
  • SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDXC UHS-II V60 256GB (SDSDXEP-256G-GN4IN)

According to this, the issue apparently does not occur with the latest and fastest SD cards from Sandisk from the V90 series – with otherwise the same product name –. Sandisk also includes these cards in its compatibility list for the R5 II. The larger V60 cards with 512 GByte and 1 TByte are also described there as unproblematic.

Those who cannot or do not want to replace their V60 cards from Sandisk immediately still have a small workaround, namely to work only with CFexpress cards for now. According to the company, there should also be no problems with Sandisk cards.
