Apple displays: What's next for Studio Display and Pro Display XDR?
Apple's current screens are more than just dusty. Thanks to more competition, the company may now be convinced to finally update them.
Apple Studio Display: Popular, but (very) old.

Apple's screen selection is anything but perfect: the existing devices are expensive and inflexible compared to the competition. Will anything change here in the foreseeable future? A look into the rumor mill.
Anyone interested in Apple screens currently has to be prepared to buy old products. The 27-inch Apple Studio Display, which still costs at least 1749 euros in its standard version, will have been on the market for three years in March. The technology was already outdated when it was released in 2022: the panel comes from the iMac 5K with Intel processor, which is significantly older.

Neither HDR nor higher refresh rates above 60 hertz are supported. The Pro Display XDR with 32-inch, 6K and LED backlight technology is even older: it was launched in December 2019, but still costs at least €5499 from Apple – without a stand, for which you pay an additional €1099.
Competition stimulates business
There is now increasing competition in the 5K 27-inch segment. LG recently announced a new UltraFine device with a studio display look. The Samsung Viewfinity S9 is also positioned against Apple's screen and offers some additional functions. A Studio Display 2 would have some catching up to do. These include Thunderbolt 5, ProMotion capability with a higher refresh rate and more brightness (currently only 600 candela peak).
Rumors that Apple could launch a new 27-inch model have been around since 2023, when it was said that a second version could be released in 2024 or 2025. Other rumors spoke of a 90 Hz display and a mini LED backlight. Currently, however, there are no current rumors to suggest that anything will happen here in the near future. The Pro Display XDR is also (very) quiet. Apple would have to work on both the built-in technology and the price. At the moment, only a few professionals who need exactly this resolution with exactly this color display in exactly this size are still buying the screen. For normal people, the Pro Display XDR is simply nothing.
