Canon with its own multi-cam live streaming app for iPhone – with high costs
Apple had integrated a function for Final Cut Pro on iPadOS that allows multiple iPhone cameras to be controlled. Canon is now coming up with something similar.

Camera manufacturer Canon is entering the business with subscription apps for iPhone and iPad – that don't even require Canon cameras. The first product is called Live Switcher Mobile (LSM) and is aimed at people who organize live streams on the Internet. As the name suggests, the tool allows you to control several iPhones and iPads to broadcast this multi-cam feed. The idea is reminiscent of a similar function in Final Cut Pro 2 for the iPad, although this is not intended for live streams, but provides different tracks for later multi-cam editing.
YouTube, Facebook plus streaming URL
Live Switcher Mobile works with up to three cameras, which can be iPads and iPhones that are connected to the same WLAN. YouTube and Facebook are supported as output platforms, but other services can also be integrated as long as there is a suitable streaming URL that can be “sent” to. There is an automatic mode, in which the device currently filming switches to another device after a certain number of seconds. This should also allow lone wolves to achieve a “dynamic flow” in their livestream.
Videos by heise
Various setting options are available for a more creative look of the livestream: you can insert text (including subtitles) and graphics into videos and have comments displayed in real time. There is also a picture-in-picture mode for reaction videos. The latter must run on iOS or iPadOS 16, 17 or 18; there are no other requirements. Synchronization takes place directly after installing the app.
Only for professionals in terms of price
LSM is basically free to use – including local recording, audio mixing and the option to integrate external audio devices. If you pay a monthly subscription fee of 20 euros, you currently get five additional features. The most important of these are the option to hide integrated advertising and the watermark during live-streaming. In addition, paying customers can switch the resolution between FHD and HD, zoom in picture-in-picture mode and move the picture-in-picture, as well as activate a picture overlay that helps with branding (still image of choice is superimposed over the video).

The new Canon app is now available for download. There is a one-month trial period for the subscription, after which the aforementioned 20 euros per month will be charged. It can be canceled via the app store account settings up to at least 24 hours before the new charge. Canon also plans to support (its own) digital cameras with LSM in the future and not just iPhones and iPads, but there is no date for this yet. Incidentally, a switching solution is already offered for these with the free MCC app, although this is not directly intended for live streams.
