Booting from backups no longer possible: macOS 15.3 fixes annoying problem
Popular backup tools such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner were not fully usable under macOS 15. Apple has now fixed the boot bug.

Good news for friends of bootable backups: A bug in macOS 15 alias Sequoia, which has been known since at least December and meant that a bootable complete backup of a Mac could no longer be created, is said to have been fixed with macOS 15.3, which was released last week. This is reported by providers of well-known backup tools such as SuperDuper.
Apple fixes the Replicator
“Just a quick note: macOS 15.3 is out now, and with it a fix for the broken Replicator,” writes developer Dave Nanian. The Replicator is an Apple tool that backup tools are now forced to use to make backups bootable. The Replicator caused a “resource busy” error during the backup process. System preboot and recovery files were not written as desired.

In SuperDuper, the function should work again immediately after updating to macOS 15.3, an update of the software itself is not necessary (even if Nanian announced that there is a new beta 3.10). He is looking forward to hopefully no longer being bombarded with support requests. The feature is available in SuperDuper via the “Erase, then copy” backup function. However, the fact that SuperDuper and other tools can now write bootable backups again does not mean that they work “in all situations”, says Nanian. He has no control over this.
Bootbar is actually legacy
In fact, providers such as Bombich Software with its Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) advise against relying on the backup capability. Apple has increasingly restricted this option, and as mentioned, has long required the use of its own replicator, which all backup programs must use.
The “standard backups” within CCC have not been bootable for some time. Instead, users should set up a new Mac and then use the backup as a migration source. Bootable backups are “legacy” for CCC and are provided with various notices. Nanian also advised its customers meanwhile, while the Replicator error was still occurring, to only make a backup of all files – without the operating system.
