You can currently get the strategy game "Humankind" for free in the Epic Games Store. The offer includes the Standard Edition of the title released in 2021 and will be available until February 13. Humankind normally costs 50 euros, but the game has also been offered for 5 euros during discount campaigns.
"Humankind" is a so-called 4X game ("Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate"), i.e. a strategy game in the style of the "Civilization" series, in which a world map must be explored and built on in hexagon sections. This makes "Humankind" an inexpensive alternative to "Civilization 7", which will be launched on 11 February and costs 70 euros.
Humankind" also has the advantage of several years of post-release updates. The game is still being actively developed today. However, if you want the complete gaming experience, you will have to buy the DLCs for a total of around 50 euros.
Changing civilizations
The comparison with "Civ 7" is not only due to the genre. "Humankind" had an idea that "Civ 7" also implements: Civilizations are not consistent, but can be changed over the course of the game. For example, you can control Babylonians through antiquity, play the Maya in the Classical period and the Umayyads in the Middle Ages. Such a variable civilization system is also implemented in "Civ 7".
Humankind" is only moderately popular with players: With 67 percent recommendations on Steam, the strategy game holds a "Balanced" score. The review aggregator Metacritic also shows a mixed result: players award 6.8 out of a possible 10 points, critics give it an average rating of 77.
"Humankind" was developed by the French Amplitude Studios, who have gained experience in the 4X genre with "Endless Space" and "Endless Legend", among others. The game was originally supposed to be released with Denuvo copy protection, but the developers changed their minds before the release.
