Apple Maps kennt "Gulf of America", streicht in der EU "Mount McKinley"
After Google, Apple is now also following the US President's instruction to patriotically rename the Gulf of Mexico. In Europe, at least the search works.

After Google, Apple has now also started to replace the name "Gulf of Mexico" (Gulf of Mexico) with "Gulf of America" (Gulf of America) in its map service. The iPhone company is thus following a decree by the new US President Donald J. Trump, who recently emphasized the renaming during a flyover with the presidential plane. Apple wants to make the change worldwide, it was reported on Tuesday, even if the rollout begins in the USA, according to a media report.
The search already works in Europe
Anyone searching for Gulf of America in Apple Maps in Europe will already land in the correct place, even if Gulf of Mexico is still listed in the map material. The location tile also still shows the old term. The decision has to do with the databases used by Apple, Google and other map services. In the USA, this is the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). After the Trump decree, "Gulf of Mexico" became "Gulf of America".

However, Google will take a different approach to Apple. It plans to continue presenting "Gulf of Mexico" to Mexican users and to display both names in the rest of the world – "Gulf of Mexico" larger, "Gulf of America" smaller in brackets. It remains unclear how Apple will proceed abroad.
When the mountain comes to the map service
Donald Trump introduced the change on January 20, directly after his inauguration. Since then, the sea area between the USA and Mexico has officially been called this in the United States. A second change concerned Mount Denali in Alaska. This was renamed back to "Mount McKinley" (after the US president of the same name).
In the meantime, there was confusion about the name in Apple Maps. In Europe, too, "Mt. McKinley" was used for some time after the renaming, although the change has since been reversed to "Mt. Denali". Apple is also adhering to the GNIS here, so "Mt. McKinley" is likely to reappear in the foreseeable future. Trump sees the changes as part of his patriotic "Make America Great Again" agenda. It is about "restoring names that honor American greatness", according to the proclamation in the decree, an executive order in which a change is ordered within 30 days.
