Analyst: Apple's Studio Display 2 finally arrives – with new features
On the market since 2022, Apple's 5K 27-inch display contains outdated technology. A well-known display expert believes that the successor is finally coming.

At the moment, we can't really recommend Apple's Studio Display. The device, which was released in 2022 , is expensive and comes with outdated technology. But apparently Apple has finally decided to launch a successor on the market. This is reported by well-known screen expert Ross Young from DSCC on X.
Panel allegedly coming from LG again
He has heard that a new version may even be released "by the end of 2025". According to this, Apple wants to use the mini-LED process in a large screen for the first time. The Studio Display is currently equipped with conventional TFT IPS LCD technology with a regular LED backlight. This means that neither a frame rate higher than 60 Hertz nor the display of (real) HDR content is currently possible. Nevertheless, the screen is popular because it delivers a full 5K at 27 inches, which can also be used in macOS Retina mode. The panel itself comes from the iMac 5K with Intel processor, which is even older.

According to Young, the mini-LED technology in the Studio Display 2 comes from the supplier Epistar. The panels themselves again come from LG Display, which delivers up to 1620 candela in HDR mode. The maximum SDR brightness is 1063 candela, the screen ("Liquid Retina Display") otherwise achieves a refresh rate of 120 hertz. It remains to be seen whether the latter will also end up in the Studio Display 2. There are more than 10,000 mini LEDs in the backlight of the MacBook Pro. These not only provide the necessary brightness for HDR mode, but also enable better black reproduction.
Unclear rumors, hope dies last
It remains to be seen whether Ross is correct in his assumption. He is currently the only Apple observer to have made this claim. However, market observer Ming-Chi Kuo had stated that Apple would present "some kind of display" in 2025 – but this could also be a new Pro Display XDR, which is also completely outdated.
Ross had already speculated in 2023 that Apple could launch a "Studio Display Pro" with a higher refresh rate (Apple term: "ProMotion"). However, nothing happened. The size of 27 inches is also unlikely to change with the Studio Display 2.
