CPU market shares: AMD gains above all in desktop CPUs
In the fourth quarter of 2024, sales of Ryzen CPUs for desktop PCs and notebooks increased. Expensive AMD processors were popular for stationary computers.

According to market researchers from Mercury Research, AMD was able to gain ground in the fourth quarter of 2024, particularly in desktop PC and notebook processors. Compared to Q4/23 of the previous year, the CPU manufacturer was capable of increasing its market share in x86 mobile processors by 55% or 8.4 percentage points at the expense of Intel to 23.7%. In stationary computers, Ryzen's share climbed by 7.3 percentage points to 27.1%.
AMD's good performance is also partly due to the major problems at Intel. In 2024, the chip manufacturer had to contend with defective Raptor Lake processors due to several bugs in the BIOS and microcode. In addition, the launch of the current desktop generation Core Ultra 200S in the fall went down the drain because they did not initially deliver the promised performance.

In addition to market share in terms of unit sales, AMD also provides figures for its share of sales. The chip manufacturer from Sunnyvale was able to achieve above-average growth in desktop CPUs in particular, which is probably due to the high demand for the comparatively expensive Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The eight-core currently costs around 570 euros and is equipped with an additional stack cache. The resulting 96 MByte level 3 cache improves the performance of 3D games in particular, which is why it is in high demand among gamers.

Price war for notebook processors
In the highly competitive notebook market, where new competition is emerging from Windows-on-ARM devices in the form of Qualcomm Snapdragon X and Nvidia/Mediatek, the 44% increase in sales is therefore slightly lower than the 55% growth in unit sales. AMD's share of x86 mobile processors is now 23.7 percent.
Server chips are also lucrative for AMD. The Mercury figures do not include AI computing accelerators such as the MI300 series. Epyc processors are now found in every fourth x86 server, but the share of sales is significantly higher at 35.5 percent. In all segments combined, AMD accounts for 24.7 percent of x86 processors sold.
