According to another report, Apple is working on at least one new display. After the well-known display analyst Ross Young, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman also commented on the topic at the weekend. The device, codenamed J427, is planned "by 2026". Young, on the other hand, had assumed 2025. Gurman also assumes that Apple will initially only update the Studio Display, which dates back to 2022. A successor to the even older Pro Display XDR (from 2019), on the other hand, is said to be a "lower priority" because the market is so small.

Gurman writes that the old devices have lost touch. "Competing monitors have long since come onto the market with higher resolutions, new processors, better panels and faster refresh rates." The "Studio Display 2" should have "roughly the same screen size" as the current model from 2022 –, i.e. 27 inches. The plan is to offer the hardware as a companion product to new MacBook Pro M5 models, which are expected in the fall.

However, Gurman does not provide any further technical details. Young, who works for the consultancy firm Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), however, said that Apple would be installing mini LEDs in the Studio Display for the first time, which would finally enable a real HDR mode. A higher refresh rate ("ProMotion") is also hoped for, which currently reaches 120 Hertz in the MacBook Pro with its mini-LEDs.

Gurman has also heard that Apple is still working on an iMac with a screen larger than 24 inches. The old 27-inch model never made it out of the Intel world and into the Apple Silicon era, although the panel still lives on in the form of the Studio Display.

According to the Bloomberg reporter, a slower update of the Pro Display XDR does not mean that Apple is abandoning the professional sector: new Mac Pro and Mac Studio devices are still planned, presumably this year. A selection of possible Studio Display competitors (albeit with 4K instead of 5K) can be found in a separate Mac & i test report. The screen of an old iMac can also be reused as an external display with a little tinkering.
