Version 2.6 of the graphics and design software Affinity is now available. The free update for existing customers of version 2 includes the first machine learning functions, as announced by the manufacturer Serif.
One special feature is that Serif relies on local data processing. The pre-trained models for machine learning must be downloaded for this purpose. They are between 200 and 800 MB in size. The manufacturer claims that no user data is used for further training. All processes take place on the device during execution.
First AI functions
The machine learning functions include an improved object selection tool for Affinity Photo photo editing under Windows, macOS and on the iPad. The tool can automatically identify and select objects clicked on in an image. The same applies to the scene selection tool. This analyzes the image and selects the element that it identifies as the main subject. In this way, users should be able to carry out retouching much more efficiently by recording macros for editing the foreground and background.
There are new functions for the DTP software Affinity Publisher that enable multi-page layouts and improve page management. The vector drawing program Affinity Designer receives extensions for the pencil, for example to automatically close drawings.
Color pipette simplified
In all three apps, the color pipette has been changed so that it now automatically applies selected color tones to the selected object. Previously, the color tone was only transferred to a field, which the user then had to click on again. If you do not want the color tone to be applied, you can prevent this by holding down the Alt key, for example. There are also many other small improvements.

The Affinity apps can be purchased individually for 75 euros (Windows/Mac) or 20 euros (iPad) – or as a universal license for all three operating systems for around 180 euros.
