Apple's Mac mini M4 received a lot of positive feedback from critics and users alike because the new compact Mac promises a lot of performance in a small space and – is relatively inexpensive by Apple standards, at least in the entry-level versions –. In addition to home and office users, the machine also taps into another target group: professionals. In addition to its use as an AI cluster, the Mac mini M4 is also suitable as a space-saving server. Apple accessory specialist Sonnet has now launched its own rack mount to match.
Three compact Macs in a 19-inch package
The US company had already stuffed earlier compact Macs such as the Mac mini in the old design or the Mac Studio into its own server racks. The new RackMac mini (2024) is now specifically designed for the Mac mini M4. It is a 2U housing (i.e. 2U) that holds up to three Mac mini M4 machines – in 19-inch rack format. The annoying power button that Apple had attached to the bottom of the Mac mini M4 is routed to the outside by Sonnet via a mechanism.
All ports remain accessible at the front and at the rear. The Mac minis also have sufficient space at the bottom so that the fans can work properly – There is also space in this area for mounting external SSDs with bus power supply. This saves money, as Apple's own flash modules are known to be very expensive. According to Sonnet, the housing should also be sufficiently permeable for wireless signals.

The manufacturer recommends using SSDs that are not too high – for example T7 and Co. from Samsung. The RackMac mini weighs 2.7 kilos and is largely made of metal. Mounting materials are included. Sonnet does not install active cooling. The case can be used both in server rooms and directly on the desk. It should also be possible to transport the Mac minis in the RackMac mini; rubber buffers are installed to protect the Macs.
The machines in the rack are not networked with each other; this requires suitable cabling. The price of the RackMac mini is 385 euros. Sales have already started at Sonnet and specialist retailers will be supplied in the coming weeks.
