HP: Firmware update paralyzes printer
HP shoots itself in the foot in the fight against third-party cartridges. A firmware update causes problems with own cartridges.

Some multifunction printers from HP's Laserjet series are currently struggling with firmware problems. The latest update with the version number 20250209 is supposed to bring the Laserjet devices M232 to M237 up to date. However, some users are reporting errors with cartridge detection.
Even with HP's own cartridges, some devices refuse print jobs. They then display error code 11 and the cartridge LEDs flash. The printers apparently do not recognize the cartridges as original HP products or judge them to be incompatible – and then refuse to work. This happens with original HP cartridges, as users note in the HP forum.
In some cases, it helps to use completely new cartridges. Problems with the recognition of so-called Instant Ink cartridges, which HP only allows to be used with an active HP+ subscription, are conceivable.

Solution in the works
Either way, the issue once again does not reflect well on HP. The manufacturer (just like some of its competitors) is taking meticulous action against the use of cheaper cartridges from third-party manufacturers. To this end, the cartridges are fitted with tiny identification chips with anchored serial numbers, which are used to recognize them.
In a statement, which is also available to heise online, the manufacturer writes: “HP is aware of a firmware issue affecting a limited number of HP Laserjet 200 series devices. Our team is actively working on a solution. Affected customers can contact our support team at https://support.hp.com.”
Another firmware update that fixes the issue is expected to be released soon. HP does not provide for firmware downgrades to older versions. Those affected will therefore have to be patient.
If you want to protect yourself from immature updates, disconnect the printer completely from the Internet. Less than two years ago, HP released firmware updates that could paralyze the Officejet Pro series.
