Apple has released a new version 2.2 of its classical music app Apple Music Classical. Despite the minor version number increase, Apple has added lots of new functions. At the same time, a web interface for the service has been launched so that it can be used directly on the desktop for the first time.
Better content in German too
Apple Music Classical collects the classical music content from Apple Music and comes as standard with the music service's €10.99 per month subscription – so you don't pay anything extra. A dedicated app for iPhone and iPad makes the content accessible. It is designed to provide a quick overview of composers, orchestras and soloists, which is much easier than users were used to with the "normal" Apple Music app for rock, pop and other genres. Apple acquired and integrated the provider Primephonic for this purpose.
With the update to version 2.2, Apple is continuing to work on better curation of the offer, which should help classical beginners in particular. Over 100 popular works have been given time-synchronized accompanying texts with further information – so-called Listening Guides. There are new, personalized recommendations on the Apple Music Classical homepage as well as curated radio stations for composers and more, which provide suitable soundtracks without a break. The new accompanying texts are also already available in German. "From identifying the instruments you hear to explaining the drama behind a symphony or concerto –, our expert commentary turns the listening experience into a learning experience and opens the doors to some of classical music's most admired works," Apple said in a statement to US media.

Log in and use in the browser
Apple is gradually expanding Apple Music Classical. The last major update was in November, which integrated CarPlay and Siri support for the first time. Another very useful feature is that Apple Music Classical can now also be accessed in the browser via its website. Here you can also log in and access your content.
What is still missing is a dedicated app for the Mac. It is unclear whether Apple is planning this. In addition, Apple Music Classical cannot be used offline directly in the app. The download function is missing, it is outsourced to Apple Music. This "media discontinuity" is often criticized.
