One dead and many frightened and traumatized employees and Apple Store visitors: an incident that took place in the iPhone manufacturer's Amsterdam store in 2022 has now been filmed by Netflix. The action flick called "iHostage", which will be available from April 18, is only "inspired" by the events, but looks very real in the trailer that has already been released.
"Based on true events"
February 22, 2022, Leidseplein: A man walks into the Apple Store carrying a gun and allegedly wearing an explosive vest, holding up to 70 people at bay in the meantime. The police say that the man is demanding a total of 200 million euros in cryptocurrency from Apple. He threatened people for several hours, but many were able to escape quickly. In the end, there was one victim who luckily managed to free himself while being handed food by a police robot. When the perpetrator tried to pursue the victim, he was hit by a civilian police vehicle and died near the scene of the crime.

The incident, which briefly received intensive coverage in the Dutch media as well as the world press – because of Apple –, has now given rise to "iHostage" in the Netherlands. "A man involuntarily finds himself in a life-threatening situation when an armed person takes a group of people hostage. A gripping drama unfolds from different perspectives that sheds light on courage, survival and the consequences of such terror," writes Netflix.
Rebuilt Apple Store
The "thriller based on true events" stars Soufiane Moussouli, Admir Sehovic, Emmanuel Ohene Boafo, Louis Talpe, Marcel Hensema and Loes Haverkort, among others. It is one hour and 40 minutes long and the original language is Dutch.

Apple itself did not wish to comment on the film when asked. According to information available to Mac & i, the film was not shot in the Apple Store Amsterdam, even though the scenes in the trailer look very real –, from the architecture to the interior to the typical Apple tables and displays, including advertising for the products. The actors who play store employees also wear Apple logos on their chests.
