Meta is experimenting with a new data protection function in its popular messenger WhatsApp. This is intended to prevent the export of chat histories if users prohibit this, better secure sent images and videos, and exclude the Meta AI chatbot from group chats. It is still unclear if and when the feature will be available to all users.
The blog WABetaInfo shows screenshots of the new setting, which can be selected per chat. Activating the selector switch makes it impossible for other users to automatically save these sent text messages and media content to their device or export them in their entirety. However, the protection is rudimentary: screenshots are still possible – to what extent it is possible to save individual posts has not been disclosed. However, the function would at least protect against someone being able to disseminate entire chat histories in a very short time and with little effort, for example.
Meta AI can also be partially deactivated
The new function is based on the expiring messages that users can already select in WhatsApp today. Posts are automatically deleted after a certain period of time. At the same time, the new function addresses reservations about Meta AI, which some users would prefer to switch off, but this is not possible. The selector switch can at least be used to ensure that no one is forced to contact the chatbot in group chats. If this function is activated, all participants in group chats will be informed.

The meta AI was only recently activated for users in the European Union, and has not only met with approval there. The blue circle that is prominently displayed cannot currently be switched off.
