Wordpress: Your own website with one AI click

WordPress has launched a new tool that can be used to create websites. The website builder is, of course, based on generative AI. Accordingly, you can speak to it in natural language and it then implements your ideas. This is supposed to be freer than templates, for example.

WordPress pages are created in various layouts that can be populated with text and images. According to the WordPress blog post, the target group is anyone who wants to “publish a good-looking website quickly and easily”. This means that smaller companies, freelancers and creators, bloggers and developers are all addressed. What is not possible: eCommerce sites, i.e., websites where you can buy something. WordPress also states that there will initially be no complex integrations. However, this is set to change soon.

A blue and red interior website in just a few minutes

To be able to use the service, you only need a free account, the hosting itself may then be subject to a charge. First of all, you write what kind of page you want as a prompt. WordPress asks for the title and immediately makes a suggestion. To put it mildly, it is snore-inducingly boring. Instead of my suggestion to call a website for interior ideas “Too much stuff,” WordPress suggests calling it “Interior Ideas by [Your name]”.

Now you can imagine that AI learns from what already exists and derives probabilities. There are more than enough websites on the Internet whose names are structured in the way that WordPress suggests. Presumably, however, the name won't win a flower pot.

WordPress then creates the page and asks for details, such as the color concept and typography. For example, you can specify colors – and WordPress knows surprisingly well what I mean by “light blue and a smooth red”. However, when asking for fonts without serifs, fonts with serifs are at least displayed, among other things. AI does what AI does.

To populate the content, i.e., replace texts and photos, you then use the standard WordPress editing functions. An AI assistant helps if necessary and explains what you need to do and how. However, this is obviously limited to a few requests per day.

WordPress populates the internet

WordPress is not the first tool that can be used to create websites. Even ChatGPT can be used for this. However, the fact that the hosting then runs via the same service makes it much easier. In addition, the Internet has long consisted of many WordPress sites or sites that are based on WordPress – It is estimated that around half of all websites are based on WordPress. It is a free content management system. The AI-created pages can also be further edited with all common WordPress tools; you can virtually take them over from the AI.

What we don't know is which AI model is behind the website builder. WordPress doesn't say. The software comes just a few days after the company behind WordPress, Automattic, announced job cuts of around 16 percent. It has also been announced that there will only be one major release in 2025.
