Apple cancels nerd series "Mythic Quest", allows additional finale
The TV+ series about the inner workings of a game studio was popular, but Apple doesn't seem to want any more. Series 4 is the end. Now a finale is needed.

Apple has surprisingly discontinued the workplace comedy "Mythic Quest", which is set in the gaming industry and popular with fans and critics. The series will not be continued after the fourth season, which only ended in March and had a cliffhanger. The makers confirmed this to the industry magazine Variety. At least the financiers at streaming service TV+ are kind enough to give the show a worthy end: According to star and creator Rob McElhenney, there will be a special episode to tie up the loose ends and bring it to a close.
Well rated, a long time coming
In terms of its approach, "Mythic Quest" was similar to nerd comedies such as "Silicon Valley". A mixture of crazy and very special humor – that gamers in particular liked very much – met conventional elements. The level of reality was high, so that even some industry insiders found themselves in the same situation. On Rotten Tomatoes, the most recent critics' rating was 97 percent. "Mythic Quest" was one of the first shows that Apple produced itself. After its TV+ launch in November 2019, it was launched in February and was given an early go-ahead for the second and then the third and fourth seasons.
The show was created by McElhenney, who is a gamer himself and became famous with "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", together with Charlie Day (also "Sunny") and Megan Ganz (ex-"Community"). McElhenney was joined by David Hornsby and Danny Pudi (also from "Community").

Is Apple saving money?
It is unclear why "Mythic Quest" was discontinued relatively abruptly. Apple spends billions on TV+, even though the streaming service is deeply in the red, but now wants to finance it less lavishly, it seems. "The end of something is always hard," say producers Ganz and McElhenney together with David Hornsby, who also plays and produces. Mythic Quest will now be discontinued after "four incredible seasons". They thanked Apple "for believing in our vision".
With the blessing of the iPhone manufacturer, it is now possible to make "a final update to our last episode". "So that we can say goodbye instead of just game over." Things had actually been looking good for "Mythic Quest", in which Ubisoft Film & Television was also involved. There were two specials plus a spin-off mini-series called "Side Quest", which only debuted at the end of March.
