Pope Leo: With Apple Watch, rather against AI
The new Pope, who comes from Chicago, apparently has a differentiated relationship with technology: the Apple Watch wearer criticizes too much AI.

At 69, the new Pope Leo XIV is comparatively young by Catholic standards. It is therefore not surprising that the Chicago-born church shepherd is also interested in technology. As nerdy photo analysts have now discovered, the man, whose real name is Robert Francis Prevost, at least occasionally wears an Apple Watch. One picture shows Prevost blessing parishioners while wearing the smartwatch; another shot from his first Holy Mass as Pope also suggests this, even if the device is harder to recognize.
Apple Watch and watch from pocket knife manufacturer
The model appears to be an inexpensive aluminum version of the computer watch with a plastic sports band. Whether Leo also owns an iPhone – which would actually be a prerequisite for using the Apple Watch, unless he is part of a family group – is not yet known.

In addition to the computer watch, however, the Pope also wears other timepieces. These include a diver's watch from the Swiss manufacturer Wenger (once better known for its pocket knives), which is reportedly currently sold out on Amazon and elsewhere. It dates back to the 1990s and contains a quartz movement and is said to cost less than 400 euros.
AI a “new challenge” for human dignity
Meanwhile, the new head of the Catholic Church has already commented on a first technology topic. At his first formal meeting with the cardinals as the newly elected Pope, he said, among other things, that the Church is facing new challenges of a technological nature – just like humanity itself. “In our times, the Church offers everyone the treasure of her social teaching,” said Leo. This should also be understood as a “response to a further industrial revolution” represented by “developments in the field of artificial intelligence”.
These bring “new challenges” in the area of defending human dignity. Leo also sees justice among people and their work as being challenged by AI. He wants to continue the reform course of his predecessor Francis, Leo indicated. The latter was always concerned with the “sober simplicity of life” and the “complete dedication to the service” of mankind.
