Apple's update to iPadOS 17.7.7 released this week does not bring any new functions to the tablets. Instead, more than two dozen security vulnerabilities have been fixed, which actually makes it advisable to install the update quickly. However, users are now reporting in various forums that their iPad is no longer working as usual after the update – There are problems at several points in the system. This is reported by iFun.de.
Users: Version is “unusable”
iPadOS 17.7.7 is intended for all iPads on which iPadOS 18.5, which also comes with various bug fixes in the area of security, no longer runs. These include the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the iPad 6. However, there are apparently serious issues after installation. According to user reports, this includes the iPad simply forgetting previously made settings.

The applications for X, GMX or DuckDuckGo, for example, can no longer be used normally. Apple's own Safari browser is also affected. The iWork programs Pages and Numbers always start with the splash screen. The version “is so unusable and unacceptable”, writes one affected person.
Various sensitive patches
What exactly is happening here is still unclear. It is conceivable that one of the security fixes integrated in the update has undesirable side effects. For example, Apple has modified iCloud document sharing, parental controls and sandbox profiles, and the StoreKit area has also been changed. One of the fixes may mean that settings are no longer stored correctly.
There are reports that the error already occurred during the beta phase of iPadOS 17.7.7. Apple has allegedly ignored the reports. The loss of settings also means that you have to log in to numerous apps again and again. Safari always looks as if the app has been started for the first time. The error is said to have nothing to do with a lack of storage space on the devices, especially as you would then receive a warning instead of settings simply not being written. Apple has not yet commented, it remains unclear when a fix will be released.
