Email security: Proofpoint buys Hornetsecurity
Proofpoint hopes to gain more expertise in the M365 field and to market the solutions from Hanover worldwide. Its founder and his team will remain on board.

The US company Proofpoint is taking over the German email security specialist Hornetsecurity. This is according to a press release from both companies. The purchase price is undisclosed, but CNBC reports a sum in excess of one billion US dollars. With the purchase, Proofpoint aims to strengthen its position in the cloud security market for Microsoft's M365.
The Hanover-based company Hornetsecurity specializes in email security and awareness with its “365 Total Protection” product. In addition to spam and malware filters, the product also includes online training for employees on topics such as phishing and social engineering. The management team around founder and CEO Daniel Hofmann will remain on board after the sale and continue to develop “Total Protection”.

Hornetsecurity CTO Dr. Yvonne Bernard commented positively on the merger to heise online: “Our entire team is looking forward to this exciting new chapter and to the great opportunity to support the protection of employees, data, and processes of even more companies worldwide with our platform for MSPs and their customers after completion of the transaction.”
Proofpoint, which is currently owned by private equity firm Thoma Bravo, is planning an IPO in 2026, CNBC reports. The company wants to strengthen its market position through strategic acquisitions before this step. The Hornetsecurity acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025.
