iPadOS 17.7.7: Apple withdraws update after problem reports
After days of error reports, Apple has responded and withdrawn an update for older iPads. But what do users who have already installed it do?

After iPadOS 17.7.7 was released online on Monday evening as a pure bug fix update with security-related improvements, reports of problems with the update have been increasing. For example, app settings are no longer saved and even Apple programs such as Pages or Safari are reset each time they are started. Apple has now finally become aware of the issue and withdrew the update on Friday night. Although iPadOS 17.7.7 still appears in the system settings in some cases, the installation process is denied. The reason for this is the termination of the signing of the update package, which makes it impossible to install.
No solution for affected devices yet
Apple has not yet provided any information on what specifically went wrong with iPadOS 17.7.7. It is also unclear what users who have already installed the update should do, as the way back to an earlier version is usually blocked. The only solution would probably be for Apple to provide a new build of iPadOS 17.7.7 that no longer contains the errors. It is not yet clear when this will happen – Until then, users will have to work with a tablet that is difficult to use.

The error occurs across all apps: regardless of whether you open the aforementioned Apple apps or TikTok, DuckDuckGo or another application, they all forget the respective login. It remains unclear how this happens, but Apple has fixed more than two dozen security vulnerabilities, some of which are very system-related. No such problems are known from iOS 18.5 and iPadOS 17.7.7, which were released together with iPadOS 17.7.7. There were also reports that users reported the issues during the beta test of iPadOS 17.7.7, but received no response from Apple. It is unusual for such a widespread error pattern to go unnoticed.
Usual fixes do not work
According to user information, the usual debugging measures do not help with the issue. Screen time, restrictions or MDM configurations are no more to blame than other settings. Even a complete reset of the device does not help.
iPadOS 17.7.7 is intended for devices such as the sixth generation iPad, the iPad Pro with 10.5 inches or the second generation iPad Pro with 12.9 inches. Later models all support iPadOS 18.5, which you should also use if possible, as this is the only version where all known security holes have been plugged.
