New Thunderbolt 5 dock from OWC with many ports
A Mac accessory specialist launches a TB-5 dock with numerous connection options. Meanwhile, competitor products are finally also available.

Big dock: The new expansion box from US provider Other World Computing (OWC), simply called Thunderbolt 5 Dock, has a total of eleven ports. This allows devices such as the MacBook Pro M4 or the Mac mini M4 with TB5 to be addressed with a maximum throughput of 80 Gb/s – and even up to 120 Gb/s for displays (all gross values). Ports for microphone/headset, MicroSD and SD via UHS-II, Ethernet (2.5 GbE) and three USB-A ports with USB 3.2 and 5 or 10 Gb/s are also included.
Up to three displays, but not (yet) on a Mac
It is also technically possible to connect up to three displays with 8K and 60 Hertz via the OWC dock, although Apple does not (yet) allow this via Thunderbolt 5, as only two displays are permitted per host port. However, DisplayLink technology can be used as an alternative, which may require an adapter. With two 8K screens, the OWC dock manages 120 Hertz each. A total of four TB5 ports are included, one for the host.

Useful: Thanks to its own power supply, the OWC dock delivers up to 140 watts via TB5. How big the “power brick” is for this could not be determined at first. OWC is currently showcasing the Thunderbolt 5 dock at the Computex trade fair in Taiwan, with availability expected from July. The price is 330 US dollars plus tax.
Caldigit can now also deliver
Meanwhile, the supply situation for pure TB5 hubs with many USB-C ports has improved somewhat. The Thunderbolt 5 Element 5 hub from Caldigit, which was announced back in the spring, can now be ordered in Europe and will be delivered from stock in the UK. The price without tax is 250 euros. The hub comes with three TB5 ports, two USB-C data ports (10 Gb/s) plus three USB-A ports (10 Gb/s).
OWC already has a Thunderbolt 5 hub available that comes with three outward-facing TB5 ports – plus USB A (10 Gb/s) and TB5 host port. It costs 190 dollars plus tax from the manufacturer, in German retail (starting from 215,99 €) you pay a little more. This allows you to quickly expand the range of TB5 ports on a Mac. An external power supply is included.
