The iPhone manufacturer has significantly expanded the availability of its tap-to-pay function, which turns the Apple cell phone into a card terminal. Since last week, a further eight European countries have been added. The service makes it possible to read credit and debit cards for payments with NFC-enabled iPhone models from the X from 2017 onwards without any additional devices. However, this requires a contract with a payment service provider.
These new countries will receive Tap to Pay
In the future, the NFC payment service will be available in Luxembourg, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Malta, and Iceland. In most regions – except Greece – Adyen can be used as a service provider. Other providers depending on the region are Mollie, Revolut, Stripe, SumUp, Viva, Rapyd, Global Payments, Surfboard, Worldline, Axepta, Pay.nl and myPOS. Teya (Iceland) and PayPal (Denmark only) will also be supported in the near future.

The offer is aimed at merchants who only want to offer credit card payments on site with an iPhone. Apple Pay and other digital wallets based on NFC are also supported. The tariffs vary –. You should check the tariffs for your country. The cards supported are Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover. In Belgium, Bancontact (via Axepta and Viva) is added, in Denmark Dankort (via Nexi and Surfboard).
Germany, Austria, and Switzerland
Apple emphasizes that Tap to Pay uses “the same security procedures as Apple Pay”. For example, Apple itself does not know what is being purchased and who is doing it. The company has compiled details on the use of Tap to Pay for German retailers on its website. The list of all supported countries, including the respective payment providers, can be found here – along with any available SDKs.
Tap to Pay is already available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as in Poland, the Netherlands, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Direct money transfers from iPhone to iPhone are not possible for private individuals. Apple Cash is still only offered in the USA.
