tvOS 26: New functions also for Apple TV HD, but without Liquid Glass
Apple has added a whole range of new features to its tvOS. There is also a new look, but not for all devices.

In addition to iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26 and macOS 26, Apple also announced a new version of tvOS at WWDC 2025, which is now also version number 26 (previously: 18). The main new features are a revised look and a series of improvements in operation. For example, tvOS adopts Apple's new "Liquid Glass" design with glass-like buttons and icons. The FaceTime app has also been revised, as has Apple Music Sing (karaoke app) and switching between Apple TV profiles.
Liquid Glass not for everyone
Important first: Although tvOS 26 runs on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K of all three generations, only the second and third generation Apple TV 4K (from 2021 and 2022) will get the new UI design. Apple only uses legacy technology in its multimedia box anyway: the latest Apple TV 4K uses an A15 Bionic, which was introduced with the iPhone 13 in 2021, while the second-generation Apple TV 4K uses an even older A12 (from 2018). Nevertheless, it is commendable that Apple continues to provide older devices with updates.
The Liquid Glass UI can be seen in the icons, the TV app and the Control Center, among other things. There are mirroring effects, transparent buttons and new "cinematic poster art" for movies. However, some people will have to take a closer look to recognize the new UI, as some changes are quite subtle. Apple promises that the interface will adapt better to the display context and, for example, give videos more space, however this will be presented in practice.

The FaceTime app has been redesigned both visually and in terms of operation. It now comes with contact posters. An iPhone must be used as a camera, which was already the case before. If desired, the profile overview can now be displayed when the device is started. This is good for families. Profiles contain settings and playlists, among other things, so that users only see what they really want.
Apple Music Sing, the karaoke app within tvOS, only supports iPhones as a microphone (from iPhone 11 / Apple TV 4K of the third generation); playback takes place via the screen. Animations on iPhone and Apple TV are also new. tvOS 26 will be released in the fall. A public beta is expected from July, developers can already test it.
