Mac mini M2: Apple launches exchange program for certain models
Buyers of the Mac mini M2 released in 2023 may no longer be able to switch on the machine. However, only certain models are affected.

Apple has issued a recall for a specific variant of the Mac mini M2. The model is the predecessor of the current, smaller Mac mini M4 and still has the traditional form factor. The series first went on sale in January 2023 and was replaced in October 2024. The reason for what Apple calls the service program is problems with the power supply, which in rare cases, according to the manufacturer, can lead to the device not even booting up or switching on.
Computer no longer moves
The affected series is the Mac mini from 2023 with M2 chip, but not the faster variant with M2 Pro. Apple also limits the error to devices manufactured between June 16, 2024, and November 23, 2024, i.e., sold quite late in the series. Apple did not specify whether older devices are also affected (or whether they will be included later).

To determine whether your Mac mini M2 is impacted, Apple offers the option of checking the serial number. This can be entered on the service program website. “If [the model, editor's note] qualifies, Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider [ASP, editor's note] will provide free service.” Apple has noted how to copy out the serial number in a separate support document. The easiest way to do this is via the “About this Mac” dialog.
“Very low percentage”
The Mac mini sent in will be examined before service to ensure that it qualifies for this program, Apple added. The manufacturer did not say how the repair would be carried out, for example whether a complete replacement of the machine would be necessary. Users who own a potentially affected device should make a backup as soon as possible so that they can continue to access their data in the event of a failure. As usual, the computer must not have any further damage before the repair that would prevent the service program from being carried out – which may have to be repaired beforehand for a fee.
As mentioned, the repair is carried out either by Apple itself (the easiest way is to schedule an appointment at a local Apple Store) or by an ASP, which can be found on Apple's website. Apple offers the service program free of charge for up to three years after the original purchase. It is unclear how many devices are impacted. Apple speaks of a “very small percentage”. Exact details of what is happening are not available.
