Fans of Apple's diary app, which has been available since iOS 17.2, are being served up a gift with iPadOS 26 and macOS 26: Journal reaches iPads and Macs for the first time, according to the company. The manufacturer has not yet revealed why the port took so long.
Transferring data from the device to the journal
Apple made a real effort with the journaling application at the beginning: In addition to the free app itself, the operating system was also provided with suitable frameworks and interfaces. The aim was to make it easy to transfer content from the iPhone, generated by the user's use of the device, into the diary. For example, the app recommends photos of certain people if they were nearby.
If you have completed a workout with the Apple Watch, this will also appear in the Journal app and can be recorded there. Recently listened to media from Apple's Music, TV or Podcast app are also offered, as are calls made (including FaceTime). The way the data was handled was not uncontroversial at first. Apple had activated tracking features without asking.

Pencil support for the iPad
With iOS 26 and macOS 26, the application is now multi-platform capable. On the iPad, thoughts can now also be handwritten using Apple Pencil and illustrations and drawings can be added. It is also possible to keep several diaries for different areas of life. Inserting images with a flexible layout is also planned, as is the integration of maps, Apple announced.
Journal is set to become the "most comfortable writing experience on the Mac. In addition to text, you can also record photos, videos, audio recordings, locations and your current mental state. Interestingly, the iPad version of Journal is already availablein the App Store for the iPad. We were initially unable to test whether it can also be installed under iPadOS 18. Journal is not part of the iCloud+ subscription and can be used free of charge. However, other new Apple apps such as the Invitations app require such a subscription.
