“Bittersweet” news from the OpenCore Legacy Patcher Project (OCLP): Mykola Grymalyuk, alias Mykola, one of the central figures in the software that allows old Macs to be updated with the latest macOS versions even years later, has announced the end of his involvement. The reason: Mykola has taken up a new position at a “fruit company”, as he writes in a detailed blog post.
Continue hacking macOS – only now at Apple
“After some really great years working on OpenCore Legacy Patcher, I think it's time to take my Apple platform breaking work in a new direction. Specifically, it's about a small start-up company based in Cupertino.” So from this week, Mykola will be working at Apple, interestingly in the company's bug bounty team. There, he will put bugs submitted by developers in macOS and the like through their paces.

Mykola will benefit from his experience at OCLP: the project is also trying to hack macOS or change it internally, as Apple itself will cut off support for older Macs at some point. The former OCLP creator is said to be based in Seattle, having relocated from Canada. According to his statements, he took up the job this week.
Things continue at OCLP
This means changes for OCLP, but not the end. Other long-standing creators are still involved. Mykola once started the project with DhinaKG in 2020. “Our basic idea was: How can we get [the then current macOS Big Sur, editor's note] to run on unsupported Macs?” OCLP succeeded and version after version brings new possibilities to users, most recently with macOS 15 and soon with macOS 26.
Mykola said he hoped that his departure would not require any changes to the overall project. “There are still many brilliant members [of the community| working on Patcher. The project remains in good hands.” Mykola wishes macOS itself “all the best for the future”. He should be directly involved in Apple's bug bounty program – but hopefully not in such a way that patching becomes more difficult and OCLP runs less frequently.
