Hardly any other announcement is likely to have given science fiction fans more excitement: Apple is planning to have the William Gibson cyberpunk classic “Neuromancer” filmed for its streaming service TV+. Following information from last spring that the rights had been acquired, there is now another sign of life: Apple announced in a short teaser on YouTube that the adaptation is “in production”.

Not much can really be gleaned from the 26-second clip: We see a revolving tracking shot through a dark pub that slowly lights up with a pinball machine, a beer tap and neon lights labeled “Bar Chatsubo”. (It is in this bar in Chiba that “Neuromancer” readers meet the hero Case in the book). Finally, the words “Neuromancer” and “Now in Production” and the Apple TV+ logo also appear. The teaser was released on the 41st anniversary of the novel: William Gibson published it on July 1, 1984.

Apple plans to release a total of ten episodes of “Neuromancer” instead of turning the book into a movie. The work actually provides enough material. The approach is similar to that of “The Peripheral” – where Amazon Prime adapted a new book by Gibson as a series (eight episodes), but then unfortunately discontinued it, complete with cliffhanger. Apple has not yet provided any information on when “Neuromancer” will be shown. However, it is clear that the production preparations have taken a long time. Case is to be played by Callum Turner (“Masters of the Air”), Molly, his bodyguard and part-lover, by Briana Middleton (“Sharper”).

“Neuromancer” is regarded as the forefather of cyberpunk literature and ultimately introduced the term “cyberspace”. “The series follows a damaged superhacker named Case who, along with his partner Molly, a mirrored-eyed assassin plotting a heist against a corporate dynasty with unsuspected secrets, gets caught in a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime,” according to Apple's slightly convoluted plot explanation.

Over the four decades since the novel was published, many attempts have been made to turn “Neuromancer” into a movie – but none have been successful. At least, there have been computer games, including a popular game for the Commodore C64. Graham Roland (“Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan,” “Dark Winds”) and JD Dillard (“Devotion,” “The Outsider,” “Sleight”) are to adapt the series.
