In future, LibreOffice will be able to import and export Markdown files. However, it is unclear when – work on the function has only just begun.

LibreOffice is getting support for Markdown files. The developers are currently working on both an export and an import, although the work is still in its infancy – The feature will not yet be available in the upcoming version 25.8. Whether LibreOffice 26.2 can then be used with Markdown files next year remains to be seen.
The Markdown markup language is already over two decades old. Users can easily create formatted text with it. Markdown is particularly popular in the web sector and with software developers, for example for writing readme files. Users generally use special editors to create documents in the language.

Native for Notepad, not for Word
Microsoft is also currently working on Markdown support, but for the text editor Notepad. Formatting can be activated via buttons if desired. The function is currently only available to Insider users. However, if you want to work with Markdown in Word, you need to install an extension such as Writage. It automatically converts the formatting into the syntax of the language.
It is not yet clear exactly how Markdown support will work in LibreOffice – All that is known is that the export is based on the existing HTML function. There is a special Writer/Web mode for it, in which only the supported formatting is available for selection. The import currently only creates an empty Writer file.
