Galaxy Z Fold7, Flip7 and Flip7 FE: Samsung flattens the foldables

The summer has been dominated by foldables at Samsung for several years now, and 2025 is no exception. The Galaxy Z Fold7 has slimmed down considerably and has become noticeably thinner and lighter. Samsung is expanding the Flip series with the more affordable Flip7 FE.

Samsung has slimmed down the Galaxy Fold7 to an impressive 4.2 millimeters. Not much less is possible; otherwise, there would be no room for the USB-C port. When closed, the new Fold is 8.9 millimeters thick, always measured without the camera hump, which adds another millimeter. This makes the Galaxy Fold7 just as slim as the Oppo Find N5, but lighter: it weighs just 215 grams, while the Oppo weighs 229 grams. The Galaxy Fold7 is therefore even a few grams lighter than the Galaxy S125 Ultra.

The slimmed-down design is particularly beneficial in terms of handling, as the Fold7 is much more comfortable to hold than its predecessor when you try it out for the first time. The new foldable is also less of a hindrance in your pocket. When closed, it looks like a normal smartphone. It no longer has to hide from the thinnest and lightest foldables from Honor and Oppo to date.

The Galaxy Fold7 has a new Snapdragon 8 Elite from Qualcomm inside. Depending on the model, the processor can access 12 or 16 GB of RAM. This is particularly helpful for multitasking with several apps used in parallel. They have plenty of space on the now 8-inch inner display. The outer screen has a diagonal of 6.5 inches. This means that both screens have grown; in the Fold6, they were 7.6 and 6.3 inches, respectively. The front display now has a 21:9 format and is less elongated than before.

Samsung has not adjusted the battery, which still has a small capacity of 440 mAh. For comparison: The Oppo Find N5, which is very comparable in terms of dimensions, has a 5600 mAh battery. Samsung is still shying away from switching to silicon-carbon batteries, which have slightly more capacity with the same size. Honor and Oppo, for example, already use them in their foldables.

The main camera of the Galaxy Fold7 has a 200 megapixel sensor instead of the 50 megapixels of the Fold6. It has the same key data as the main camera of the S25 Ultra but is slightly lower. It is supported by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle and a triple telephoto with 10 megapixels. The selfie cameras inside and outside are now identically equipped with a 10-megapixel sensor. The inner camera previously only had 4 megapixels. It is understandable that Samsung has replaced the camera under the display with one that looks through a hole in the screen, as on all other smartphones: the 4-megapixel camera simply took pictures that were too poor.

Samsung continues to rely on AI features in the software. The “magic eraser,” which removes unwanted parts from photos, is now easier to use. The AI-supported removal of disturbing background noise in videos now works not only during subsequent editing but also live during recording. All three new Foldables will receive Android updates and security patches for seven years.

The Galaxy Fold7 costs 2099 euros in the smallest storage version with 12/256 GB and 2219 euros with 12/512 GB. The top model with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB internal memory costs 2519 euros. At the launch, Samsung is supplying the larger model variant at the price of the next smaller one.

The Galaxy Flip7 is getting bigger and stronger

Samsung has flattened the Samsung Galaxy Flip7 less; at 6.5 millimetres (excluding the camera hump), it is only slightly thinner than its predecessor at 6.9 millimetres. On the other hand, the front display of the small foldable is now larger, at 4.1 inches instead of the previous 3.4 inches. Samsung has achieved this by increasing the width of the casing by four millimetres, narrowing the frames around the screen, and integrating the camera lenses. Similar to the Motorola foldables, these are now surrounded by the screen.

The wider casing also results in a much larger internal display. The Samsung Galaxy Flip7 has a diagonal of 6.9 inches, which is 0.2 inches more. The format is also no longer quite as elongated; Samsung has installed a 21:9 screen. OLED and 120 Hertz go without saying.

Unlike last year's model, the new Galaxy Flip no longer has a Snapdragon processor, but the Exynos 2500 from Samsung's own production. A comparison will show how its performance is at peak performance and over long distances. In the past, Qualcomm processors have always been one step ahead of Exynos chips.

Samsung has made the battery of the Galaxy Flip7 more powerful; at 4300 mAh, it is almost as strong as that of the Fold7. Meanwhile, the cameras remain unchanged: 50-megapixel main camera, 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle, 10-megapixel front camera.

Samsung offers the Galaxy Flip7 with 12/256 GB for 1199 euros. With 12/512 GByte, it costs 1319 euros. The large storage version is also available at the price of the small one.

Flip6 returns as Flip7 FE

With the Galaxy Flip7 FE, Samsung is turning the previous foldable duo into a trio. The FE largely corresponds to the Galaxy Flip6 from last year in terms of appearance and technology; it does not have the new front display of the Flip7, and Samsung has also left the battery at 4000 mAh. At 6.7 inches, the internal display is also still at the same level as last year's model. Samsung uses the Exynos 2400 processor, but only with 8 GB of RAM. With a price of 999 euros, Samsung's cheapest foldable remains a symbolic euro below the thousand euro mark. It also comes with double the memory at launch, with 256 GB instead of 128 GB. The regular price of the FE with 256 GB is 1059 euros.

The Flip7 FE raises the question of the target group, as it looks like the Galaxy Flip6 from the previous year. However, last year's model is already available for just over 700 euros, a huge price advantage. In addition, the Flip6 is powered by the tried-and-tested Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 instead of the Exynos chip in the Flip7 FE. One of the few advantages of the new model is that updates will continue for another year with the FE.
