New MacBooks: Allegedly no M5 models this year
Apple is reportedly having to postpone its first M5 notebooks. But what does this mean for converted models with OLED screens?

Apple is apparently not planning any new MacBook models this year. It was actually expected that the company would present new MacBook Pro machines with the as yet unreleased Apple Silicon M5 processor for the first time in the fall of – probably in October or November. The machines are usually released every year. However, according to the usually well-informed Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, this won't happen this year.
M5 comes in advance in the iPad Pro
According to this, there will only be one device with M5 in 2025: a new iPad Pro. According to Gurman, this could be released in October, with Apple's internal codenames being J817, J818, J820, and J821. According to this, 11-inch and 13-inch models are planned. Apple first debuted a completely new Apple Silicon chip in an iPad Pro in 2024—with the iPad Pro M4, which had already been released in May. M4 Macs then followed in the fall, in the form of the MacBook Pro M4 with 14 and 16 inches in variants with M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max, as well as the iMac M4 and Mac Mini M4.

However, Apple does not seem to be able to maintain the annual pace with the MacBook Pro. Instead, according to Gurman, the company wants to switch to the first half of 2026 with the new MacBook Pro models, allegedly together with new MacBook Air machines. All are set to receive the new M5 chip. According to the report, other spring models include an iPhone 17e as the successor to the iPhone 16e (with A19 SoC from the iPhone 17, otherwise similar to its predecessor), as well as a new iPad Air with M4 chip and a new, accelerated standard iPad. Apple is also reportedly planning a new monitor as the successor to the Studio Display.
MacBook Pro with OLED not until 2027?
The M5 shifts could lead to a redesign of Apple's MacBook Pro models being delayed. Market observers had originally predicted that the M5 devices, which are visually indistinguishable from the M4 variants, would appear in 2025, followed by OLED models in the fall of 2027. These should be more energy-efficient, possibly thinner (again), and give the line-up more pizzazz after Apple has been maintaining the current look for years.
Apple currently uses two larger OLED screens, both in the iPad Pro M4 with 11 and 13 inches. Otherwise, OLED screens have been used in the iPhone since the iPhone X. It is now conceivable that Apple will wait until 2027 to redesign the MacBook Pro. However, this has not yet been confirmed, and Gurman's new statements also remain rumors for now.
